A consumer recently reached out to us to tell us they scanned a QR code that had a picture of a worker on it, which helps to learn the story of the farmer. The company was NatureSweet. You can buy their items at participating Acmes, Aldis, Shop Rites, and more. This company was new to us too. They are Fair Trade certified as well as a B Corporation.
One thing that stood out on the NatureSweet website, was a new label you can find on foods called EFI Certification. This label is used for vegetables and fruits that help the consumer see that there are people being treated fairly who work on the farms and that labor trafficking is not a concern when you buy their items. It is important for us to see social responsibility that is more transparent and helpful to those who are food shopping. What is incredible about this certification is that for every purchase you make that has this certification, the farmers are being paid 87% of that money directly! This label has the highest standard you can receive in the agricultural field.

While we at Justice Network may be prone to wanting to see these types of labels on foods, not everyone looks for them or understands the labels. This could bring a new awareness to those who might be curious and could help them learn that there are those in the agricultural field who are being forced into slavery. Maybe they’ll go down a rabbit hole and become more aware of further purchases while asking, “Where does my food come from? Who are the people making the products I love?”
